The Mariners are Seattle's Major League Baseball team, originally franchised in 1977 and are part of the West division of the American League. They have played home games at Safeco Field, in the SoDo District, since the 1999 season. The team name “Mariners” comes from the prominent maritime culture in Seattle and the Pacific North West region. The team nickname is the “M's” which comes from the primary logo that adorned team baseball caps from 1987 – 1992. The team has a long and rich history, including such iconic players as Ken Griffey Jr, Randy Johnson and Edgar Martinez. Frustratingly, for their fans, the Mariners are one of only two current baseball teams to never have reached the World Series, the other being the Washington Nationals.
